This guide is intended to be the first edition of a public relations exercise in child dental health education for parents and guardians in the Bahamas.
It has become necessary due to the unacceptable incidence of dental caries (cavities), particularly in infants and young children that seems to continue unabated from one generation to the next.
Our greatest concern is the relatively high incidence of nursing bottle caries in the inner city which appears to be directly related to the feeding practices of mothers who are ignorant of dental disease processes.
Moreover, the prevailing view that baby teeth are unimportant has caused many parents to neglect this primary dentition and hope for better prevention measures when the permanent teeth take their place.
Unfortunately, the bad dental habits learned during these years tends to remain even after the teeth change.
Additionally, too many adults see the dental office as a repair shop, only to be searched out when there is a crisis in the mouth.
The goal of this publication is to increase awareness of the importance of baby teeth and to provide a literary resource on the role of expecting mothers in dental disease prevention.
Furthermore, proper application of this information will ensure a better quality of life for their children, while reducing the financial strain on public health services.
It is my intention to make all future editions more pictorial as I gather photographs from my practice.
