The Costellos along with the Faheys are fictional mid-western families depicted from the 1900's to the 1950's.
During the "Great Depression" years, the Faheys experience the humiliation of the "welfare state." The Costellos, however, thrive and prosper in the same economic climate.
The terrible "Great War" of 1914 to 1918 impacts both families to a degree that doesn't become apparent until many years after it ends.
Despite the wide disparity, not only in fortune but philosophy, the families merge through a marriage.
During those depression years, both families' fortunes and futures are affected by the anomaly of hoodlums and gangsters being elevated to the status of folk heroes.
Conversely, by the same tortured logic, many considered all rich to be robber barons.
World War II finds both families with sons and friends in the Pacific and European conflicts.
Their actions of love, passion, heroism, and shame impacts their children and grandchildren for ensuing generations.

  •     I'm the authors nephew therefore any review by me would obviously be biased. However my good friend Dave S. , a retired school teacher, amateur historian and insatiable reader provided the following review as he is, believe it or not, not an Amazon customer.....yet. After reading the preface of the book, COSTELLOS, I wasn't highly motivated to read it. I was disappointed in the fact that it was fiction but intrigued by the fact that the author, Tom Sitter, was 89 years old, was born in northern Wisconsin, was a retired building and fire inspector, and was a combat medic in Europe during WWII. The book centered around the depression and WWII and reflects his memories of that period. Being a student of U.S, history, I decided to read on. The story centers around two families, the Costellos and the Faheys, who reside in the upper Midwest. Their trials and tribulations through the depression and WWII kept my attention through the approximately 750 pages. The author's depiction of the depression and WWII combat has, I believe, given me a better understanding of those two periods in our history. However, I did at times find it hard to follow the story line. The author's transition from one situation to the next could have been smoother. At times I had to reread to determine what I had missed. Thank goodness the family trees for the Costellos, Faheys and Anita were provided. Obviously this is no literary masterpiece. Also, I found it disappointing that many of the most important characters in the book met very sad endings. In conclusion, even though I struggled at times to comprehend, I thoroughly enjoyed it and would recommend it for your reading pleasure.
