About the Author

Ronald T. 
Potter-Efron, M.S.W., Ph.D., is a clinical psychotherapist and a certified alcohol and drug counselor with a special focus on anger management.
His many publications include Angry All the Time; Letting Go of Anger; Letting Go of Shame; Anger, Alcoholism, and Addiction; Working Anger; and Being, Belonging, Doing.
Potter-Efron conducts his private practice at First Things Counseling Center in Eau Claire, Wisconsin, and leads his popular anger workshops all over the country.

  •     This is a great workbook to send with a client for homework. It can provided some insight on how the client has done during the week and it helps keep the focused.
  •     I teach anger management and use this and and supplement this with his other book angery all the time. The group seems to enjoy this more than the other material I had used and the activities that one can use from thse books opens up the group to look at themselves in a nonjudgemental way and realize that they need to change without being or feeling bad about themselves. I highly recommend this book I do not have my license yet but just graduated with my LPC and am working towards licensure but for now im employed at a mental health facility that introduced me to this book and put me in charge of the group and i am so glad they did. I cant believe how much it has helped me in my own life!

  •     I worked on this workbook in conjunction with an anger management class that I took, and it's been incredibly insightful. It really delves into a lot of the hidden emotional mechanisms behind anger, and I uncovered a lot about myself in the process that was a sort of surprise. It's given me great tips on how to spot anger in myself and how to soften it before I let it control me. I found the chapters on anger justification and anger recognition most helpful so far. Even though the class is over, whenever I'm angry, I go to this workbook, and it really helps. The exercises are very doable too.

  •     I have used Stop the Anger Now, by Potter-Efron, in a private mental health setting for over a year now. Potter-Efron is the cornerstone of my treatment program for anger management along with supplementations from The Anger Control Workbook, by McKay.One thing I appreciate about Stop the Anger Now is that it is easy to implement along with pre-testing/post-testing from the Aggression Questionnaire (AQ). (The AQ is "Designed to aid in evaluating an individual's aggressive responses and ability to channel those responses in a safe and constructive manner" (Buros Institute, 2000). This is a test (Buss & Durkee, 1957) that has been revised and used for almost 50 years to assess anger.)I have been impressed with my clients' ability to implement the concepts in Potter-Efron without too much struggle in theory. I have seen measurable successes from using this book (including individual therapy, of course).
