Sam Harris' The End of Faith(2005) and Richard Dawkins' The God Delusion (2006) have questioned the existence of any spiritual being and met with enormous success.
Now, noted, often acerbic journalist Hitchens enters the fray.
As his subtitle indicates, his premise is simple.
Not only does religion poison everything, which he argues by explaining several ways in which religion is immoral, but the world would be better off without religion.
Replace religious faith with inquiry, open-mindedness, and the pursuit of ideas, he exhorts.
Closely reading major religious texts, Hitchens points to numerous examples of atrocities and mayhem in them.
Religious faith, he asserts, is both result and cause of dangerous sexual repression.

Believers will be disturbed and may even charge him with blasphemy (he questions not only the virgin birth but the very existence of Jesus), and he may not change many minds, but he offers the open-minded plenty to think about.

"I am pretty sure that Hitchens's book will stand out as a leading example. 
How does Hitchens fare as a narrator? Quite well, at least to these unwashed ears.
Hitchens has a windy prose style that is sometimes too stuffed with parenthetical qualifiers to be read easily.
His breezy narration, however, makes such cluttered prose easy on the ear; we sense more of a conversational lecturer at work rather than a mere writer.
Of course, Hitchens' upper-crust British accent will sound either charming or down-right intimidating.

Reviewed by Stephen Prothero A century and a half ago Pope Pius IX published the Syllabus of Errors, a rhetorical tour de force against the high crimes and misdemeanors of the modern world. 
God Is Not Great, by the British journalist and professional provocateur Christopher Hitchens, is the atheists' equivalent: an unrelenting enumeration of religion's sins and wickedness, written with much of the rhetorical pomp and all of the imperial condescension of a Vatican encyclical.Hitchens, who once described Mother Teresa as "a fanatic, a fundamentalist, and a fraud," is notorious for making mincemeat out of sacred cows, but in this book it is the sacred itself that is skewered.
Religion, Hitchens writes, is "violent, irrational, intolerant, allied to racism and tribalism and bigotry, invested in ignorance and hostile to free inquiry, contemptuous of women and coercive toward children." Channeling the anti-supernatural spirits of other acolytes of the "new atheism," Hitchens argues that religion is "man-made" and murderous, originating in fear and sustained by brute force.
Like Richard Dawkins, he denounces the religious education of young people as child abuse.
Like Sam Harris, he fires away at the Koran as well as the Bible.
And like Daniel Dennett, he views faith as wish-fulfillment.Historian George Marsden once described fundamentalism as evangelicalism that is mad about something.
If so, these evangelistic atheists have something in common with their fundamentalist foes, and Hitchens is the maddest of the lot.
Protestant theologian John Calvin was "a sadist and torturer and killer," Hitchens writes, and the Bible "contain[s] a warrant for trafficking in humans, for ethnic cleansing, for slavery, for bride-price, and for indiscriminate massacre." As should be obvious to any reasonable person -- unlike Hitchens I do not exclude believers from this category -- horrors and good deeds are performed by believers and non-believers alike.
But in Hitchens's Manichaean world, religion does little good and secularism hardly any evil.
Indeed, Hitchens arrives at the conclusion that the secular murderousness of Stalin's purges wasn't really secular at all, since, as he quotes George Orwell, "a totalitarian state is in effect a theocracy." And in North Korea today, what has gone awry is not communism but Confucianism.Hitchens is not so forgiving when it comes to religion's transgressions.
He aims his poison pen at the Dalai Lama, St.
Francis and Gandhi.
Among religious leaders only the Rev.
Martin Luther King Jr.
comes off well.
But in the gospel according to Hitchens whatever good King did accrues to his humanism rather than his Christianity.
In fact, King was not actually a Christian at all, argues Hitchens, since he rejected the sadism that characterizes the teachings of Jesus.
"No supernatural force was required to make the case against racism" in postwar America, writes Hitchens.
But he's wrong.
It was the prophetic faith of black believers that gave them the strength to stand up to the indignities of fire hoses and police dogs.
As for those white liberals inspired by Paine, Mencken and Hitchens's other secular heroes, well, they stood down.Hitchens says a lot of true things in this wrongheaded book.
He is right that you can be moral without being religious.
He is right to track contemporary sexism and sexual repression to ancient religious beliefs.
And his attack on "intelligent design" is not only convincing but comical, coursing as it does through the crude architecture of the appendix and our inconvenient "urinogenital arrangements." What Hitchens gets wrong is religion itself.Hitchens claims that some of his best friends are believers.
If so, he doesn't know much about his best friends.
He writes about religious people the way northern racists used to talk about "Negroes" -- with feigned knowing and a sneer.
God Is Not Great assumes a childish definition of religion and then criticizes religious people for believing such foolery.
But it is Hitchens who is the naïf.
To read this oddly innocent book as gospel is to believe that ordinary Catholics are proud of the Inquisition, that ordinary Hindus view masturbation as an offense against Krishna, and that ordinary Jews cheer when a renegade Orthodox rebbe sucks the blood off a freshly circumcised penis.
It is to believe that faith is always blind and rituals always empty -- that there is no difference between taking communion and drinking the Kool-Aid (a beverage Hitchens feels compelled to mention no fewer than three times).
If this is religion, then by all means we should have less of it.
But the only people who believe that religion is about believing blindly in a God who blesses and curses on demand and sees science and reason as spawns of Satan are unlettered fundamentalists and their atheistic doppelgangers.
Hitchens describes the religious mind as "literal and limited" and the atheistic mind as "ironic and inquiring." Readers with any sense of irony -- and here I do not exclude believers -- will be surprised to see how little inquiring Hitchens has done and how limited and literal is his own ill-prepared reduction of religion.
Christopher Hitchens is a brilliant man, and there is no living journalist I more enjoy reading.
But I have never encountered a book whose author is so fundamentally unacquainted with its subject.
In the end, this maddeningly dogmatic book does little more than illustrate one of Hitchens's pet themes -- the ability of dogma to put reason to sleep.

Putting It MildlyIf the intended reader of this book should want to go beyond disagreement with its author and try to identify the sins and deformities that animated him to write it (and I have certainly noticed that those who publicly affirm charity and compassion and forgiveness are often inclined to take this course), then he or she will not just be quarreling with the unknowable and ineffable creator who–presumably–opted to make me this way. 
They will be defiling the memory of a good, sincere, simple woman, of stable and decent faith, named Mrs.
Jean Watts.
It was Mrs.
Watts’s task, when I was a boy of about nine and attending a school on the edge of Dartmoor, in southwestern England, to instruct me in lessons about nature, and also about scripture.
She would take me and my fellows on walks, in an especially lovely part of my beautiful country of birth, and teach us to tell the different birds, trees, and plants from one another.
The amazing variety to be found in a hedgerow; the wonder of a clutch of eggs found in an intricate nest; the way that if the nettles stung your legs (we had to wear shorts) there would be a soothing dock leaf planted near to hand: all this has stayed in my mind, just like the “gamekeeper’s museum,” where the local peasantry would display the corpses of rats, weasels, and other vermin and predators, presumably supplied by some less kindly deity.
If you read John Clare’s imperishable rural poems you will catch the music of what I mean to convey.
At later lessons we would be given a printed slip of paper entitled “Search the Scriptures,” which was sent to the school by whatever national authority supervised the teaching of religion.
(This, along with daily prayer services, was compulsory and enforced by the state.) The slip would contain a single verse from the Old or New Testament, and the assignment was to look up the verse and then to tell the class or the teacher, orally or in writing, what the story and the moral was.
I used to love this exercise, and even to excel at it so that (like Bertie Wooster) I frequently passed “top” in scripture class.
It was my first introduction to practical and textual criticism.
I would read all the chapters that led up to the verse, and all the ones that followed it, to be sure that I had got the “point” of the original clue.
I can still do this, greatly to the annoyance of some of my enemies, and still have respect for those whose style is sometimes dismissed as “merely” Talmudic, or Koranic, or “fundamentalist.” This is good and necessary mental and literary training.However, there came a day when poor, dear Mrs.
Watts overreached herself.
Seeking ambitiously to fuse her two roles as nature instructor and Bible teacher, she said, “So you see, children, how powerful and generous God is.
He has made all the trees and grass to be green, which is exactly the color that is most restful to our eyes.
Imagine if instead, the vegetation was all purple, or orange, how awful that would be.” And now behold what this pious old trout hath wrought.
I liked Mrs.
Watts: she was an affectionate and childless widow who had a friendly old sheepdog who really was named Rover, and she would invite us for sweets and treats after hours to her slightly ramshackle old house near the railway line.
If Satan chose her to tempt me into error he was much more inventive than the subtle serpent in the Garden of Eden.
She never raised her voice or offered violence–which couldn’t be said for all my teachers–and in general was one of those people, of the sort whose memorial is in Middlemarch, of whom it may be said that if “things are not so ill with you and me as they might have been,” this is “half-owing to the number who lived faithfully a hidden life, and rest in unvisited tombs.”However, I was frankly appalled by what she said.
My little ankle-strap sandals curled with embarrassment for her.
At the age of nine I had not even a conception of the argument from design, or of Darwinian evolution as its rival, or of the relationship between photosynthesis and chlorophyll.
The secrets of the genome were as hidden from me as they were, at that time, to everyone else.
I had not then visited scenes of nature where almost everything was hideously indifferent or hostile to human life, if not life itself.
I simply knew, almost as if I had privileged access to a higher authority, that my teacher had managed to get everything wrong in just two sentences.
The eyes were adjusted to nature, and not the other way about.I must not pretend to remember everything perfectly, or in order, after this epiphany, but in a fairly short time I had also begun to notice other oddities.
Why, if god was the creator of all things, were we supposed to “praise” him so incessantly for doing what came to him naturally? This seemed servile, apart from anything else.
If Jesus could heal a blind person he happened to meet, then why not heal blindness? What was so wonderful about his casting out devils, so that the devils would enter a herd of pigs instead? That seemed sinister: more like black magic.
With all this continual prayer, why no result? Why did I have to keep saying, in public, that I was a miserable sinner? Why was the subject of sex considered so toxic? These faltering and childish objections are, I have since discovered, extremely commonplace, partly because no religion can meet them with any satisfactory answer.
But another, larger one also presented itself.
(I say “presented itself” rather than “occurred to me” because these objections are, as well as insuperable, inescapable.) The headmaster, who led the daily services and prayers and held the Book, and was a bit of a sadist and a closeted homosexual (and whom I have long since forgiven because he ignited my interest in history and lent me my first copy of P.
Wodehouse), was giving a no-nonsense talk to some of us one evening.
“You may not see the point of all this faith now,” he said.
“But you will one day, when you start to lose loved ones.”Again, I experienced a stab of sheer indignation as well as dis-belief.
Why, that would be as much as saying that religion might not be true, but never mind that, since it can be relied upon for comfort.
How contemptible.
I was then nearing thirteen, and becoming quite the insufferable little intellectual.
I had never heard of Sigmund Freud–though he would have been very useful to me in understanding the headmaster–but I had just been given a glimpse of his essay The Future of an Illusion.From the Hardcover edition.

  •     Let me first say, because it's important here and it points at why I value this book, that I come from Poland's Catholicism. This is one of the books I picked up to confirm my long-standing disagreement with religion. I like the informal (yet eloquent) style, clarity of thought, and orderly composition. I found here quite a few related topics and they all validate my observations and experiences. After purchasing and reading ebook I also bought a paperback to have this new friend in my real life library and to be able to lend the book if needed. Now I savor The Portable Atheist which I bought for Kindle and in paper as well, for the same reason. There are not that many books on atheism or anticlericalism in my country, and if they get published at all – they are usually limited to the local perspective, and they also tend to be quite polite and cautious, for political reasons. But at this point in my life I felt it was time for a blast of fury. For something big, boldly reasoned. I'm glad I found this brilliant mind.
  •     It's never enough to tell over and over again how much one needs to go through the free thinking tradition that questions the power and authority of religion in the world. It's again so urgent to engage in the atheist's reasoning. To stop beeing afraid because the history of the exercise of religion, namely the western monotheist religions, has been one of fear and punishment and obscurantism and superstition and torture and war and ignorance.It's all been said about the eloquence and wit and knowledge and courage of Hitchens. Subscribe to it all.We need brave men and women to come forth and break the fear of offending this dark ages' proponents of an evil, dogmatic, violent and absolutist global society where science and art and literature and free thinking and debating and scrutiny and study and curiosity and fun and openness and tolerance have no place.It's urgent to keep the fight against the final fight, the final war, the final word, the final truth, intending to put an end to the only way humans are supposed to live: the tentative and unfinished and interrogative and curious and sternly studious life. Striving enlightenment and beauty and knowledge and awe is our path in the world and this path can only be walked on by repudiating absolutist violent claims based on absolutist violent books that belong in History and in the past.Mandatory reading!
  •     This is a masterpiece. Along with "The God Delusion" by Richard Dawkins and "The End of Faith" by Sam Harris, this excellent work by the late Christopher Hitchens is one leg of the 'milking stool' of my atheism. It is provocative, insightful, and beautifully written in fluid and articulate prose. Even if you're a believer, I encourage you to read this book. It's not purely a polemic against religion; rather, it raises questions that every theist should consider and be able to answer.
  •     The best book I have ever read debunking organized religion. Recommended for anyone looking for enlightenment and the truth, unaltered.

  •     As important to human consciousness as Copernicus-- and far more critical to furthering world peace than Moses, Jesus, or Muhammad. I have dared the "faith-full" to read it through. They skim, they reguse, abd they distort and misremember. It is a shocking book-- like learning that your pappa was Santa Claus, but a thousand tomesmore difficult to accept. Truly a watershed in our evolution of thoughtfulness and an accurate awareness of the Mystery and the Truth!!!

  •     So I've read a few reviews on here saying that the book is just the same rehashed arguments Hitchens used in his debates.
  •     I'll make this short and to the point. This book is well written and very informative. It is obviously biased or caters more to the non-believer, but I think anyone can read this and learn a lot. Hitchens is a great writer and provides a lot of insight that you don't normally hear from the general media or other critics of religion. Hitchens was a journalist first so this book contains a lot of his personal experience and reads in a way that is very similar to a publication. I am not giving this a 5-star only because a lot of what Hitchens talks about is, at least in this point in time, already known or in the spotlight, and I think it is more eye opening to someone who is just getting into this kind of literature or discourse. The seasoned atheist or secularist will at best be reminded of things he or she already knows and find it an entertaining book for sure.
  •     God Is Not Great is a superbly efficacious antidote to religious thinking and a quick reference for sound reasoning and great philosophers of antiquity.Hitchens' book changed my life in profound and wonderful ways. By encouraging the use and strengthening of one's own faculties, it can truly awaken the slumbering intellect of the faithful and lead the reader down an exhilarating rabbit hole of human knowledge and fearless inquiry.It's a great contemporary work to whet a new reader's appetite for greats such as Spinoza, Russell, Hume, Lucretius and the like.I've purchased this book as a gift multiple times and it never fails to positively motivate my friends and family to think for themselves.In a post-nuclear world, where a reality tv gameshow host holds the highest office in the land, we need more Hitchens. His works live on! Buy and share! Share the truly good news that god is not great and we are the architects of our own fate!
  •     Albeit preaching to the choir somewhat, I quite enjoyed Hitchens' treatise on the postulate that not only are all religions transparently manmade rather than divinely inspired, but that religion itself is a cancer of belief that aids and abets in many of the greatest atrocities in human history. Thankfully, in America we are mostly spared from the fundamentalist and autocratic dictates of a true theocracy, and modern-day believers can be excused for some ignorance in the role of religion in conquest and suffering, but to the extent that free inquiry and honest skepticism is still threatened by religion in the States, we still suffer from the disease.The main criticism I could level against this book is that it is rather long and that on occasion following the threads of history and philosophy woven throughout the book can be a bit difficult. However, it's still very much worth the effort.
