Author Name:Rick Fantasia,Maurice Isserman
Comprehensive and accessible, this A-to-Z compendium not only examines statistics, legislation, and solutions, but also considers homelessness in its historical dimensions.
From Library Journal
This sourcebook is primarily a dictionary, explaining 500 items, persons, policies, organizations, court decisions, laws, etc., relevant to the topic of homelessness.
Lengthy appendixes list organizations, some 1990 census figures, and an 84-page report, "A Status Report of Hunger and Homelessness in America's Cities: 1993" (U.S.
Conference of Mayors, December 1993).
The extensive bibliography has no subject access.
Fantasia (sociology, Smith Coll.) and Isserman (history, Hamilton Coll.) open with an excellent introduction on the history and dimensions of the problem but fail to impart the scope and contents of the book.
Compared with the several reference works available on homelessness, the strengths of this work are its highly informative dictionary entries and inclusion of the U.S.
Conference of Mayor's report, a useful item that was not widely disseminated to libraries.
Mary Ellen Hombs's American Homelessness (ABC-Clio, 1994.
2d ed.) provides more resource information with better organization and is thus the first choice for many libraries.
Larger public and academic libraries should find both volumes useful.Mary Jane Brustman, Univ of Albany Libs.Copyright 1995 Reed Business Information, Inc.
