  •     I have to agree 100% with the review given by marty888nyc! However, I also would love to read Mr. Figueroa's next novel! Just too many inconsistencies in places and time but an easy read.
  •     Be warned, this is a disturbing story. Just when you think the situation can't get any worse, it does. Read at your own risk!
  •     This is a heartbreaking story of love, hate, and everything in between. A very realistic look at the lives and times of a gay young man and his efforts to survive in a harsh world. It has some scenes that make you cringe, that make you want to whisk the character away and save him. The plot, character and story development were all done well. The story flowed well, and I had a hard time putting it down. I wish more people would read this, to just get a glimpse, a tiny idea of just one person's struggles. I enjoy a book that shows me what other humans trials may be.
  •     I REALLY ENJOYED IT.It was a really good read and I think the author is very Talented.I hope to read more of his work in the future.
  •     ....even though I've only given it 3 stars. First, the good: the writing style is clean, comfortable and easy to read, and the characters are well-drawn.But ..... there are too many improbabilities and impossibilites to make this a satisfying read. We are told in the very first paragraph that the setting is a "small town also known as the most racist place in the country. Everyone is white, straight and Christian." Yet later in the novel the action moves to a gay club that is "one of the best in town" (how many ARE there in this small town??) and where "hundreds" are dancing (I thought everyone was straight???) - in fact, the scene described sounds a bit like Studio 54 in its prime. When the central character needs to go to a hotel, he does a Google search to locate the place. Keep in mind, he's lived in the same place for all of his fifteen years. And the hotel is "only a few blocks from my house". So in fifteen years, he never noticed this big fancy hotel just a few blocks from his house? And he has to get a friend to drive him there, even though a page or two later the hotel is mentioned as being a 10-minute walk from his house.Nit-picking, perhaps, but too many things like this are sprinkled throughout the book.I don't want to mention any spoilers, but the last third of the novel spins out of control, with incidents and coincidences that leave you shaking your head in despair. This is a first novel by a young author, and while there are enough things wrong to leave you dissatisfied, there's also enough talent on display to reward your time.Bottom line: I'll definitely want to read Mr. Figueroa's next book.
  •     A gritty story filled with sadness and triumphs. As a gay teen Bruce finds love but has so many obstacles to overcome.
