  •     Normally, these pricey, colorful nonfiction titles sacrifice content for excellent layouts and visual garbage: pretty pictures with zero informational content. In this case, however, each page looks exactly as if it were done on an old-school typewriter (single-spaced--!); while the section on the Scientific Method repeats verbatim a 3 paragraph chunk of text from the Introduction. In short: this book is so ugly it's shrug-worthy. The reason it's not is that no kid or teenager is going to check this book out and read it. They're going to go straight to the individual experiments and try to perform them. And that's where the book really shines. As magic tricks, the experiments will look impressive. Despite the lawyer-proofing verbiage, most of these titles can be done at home, by kids, with materials ready to hand or easy to acquire at the local hardware store. Best of all there is no visual garbage: every diagram and illustration relates to and clarifies the text; which is itself a model of clarity. The physics and chemistry behind the experiments is solid; Gardener includes the relevant equations but doesn't make them necessary for a basic understanding of the principles involved. This is a book that will work for both middle and high school students. Recommended grades 6 and up.
