  •     Turgid Reading of an abstruse philosophy. H. Beam Piper explained his theories in a much more understandable manner.
  •     In the film Donnie Darko, there is a very old woman who wrote a forgotten book, The Philosophy of Time Travel. Donnie flips through the pages, there is writing and diagrams were she explained her discovery. That film is a bit of a mess, though many have mistaken the mess for profundity, and the mention of the old lady and indeed the book is cut off, and the film isn't even about time travel! But that old lady and her writings have always intrigued me.Imagine, an old hag living in the same town as you who solved the philosophy of time travel, but she aged and was forgotten. The film works because of the mystery of the book, the theme and the silence about it.J.W. Dunne is probably the inspiration for that old lady.A man living a few decades ago who was as good a writer as his friend, H.G. Wells but didn't write fiction. Either Dunne was complete bonkers or he solved the riddle of time and immortality. Today he is all but forgotten, like that old lady. But Dunne claimed to have discovered immortality, he even supplies diagrams.Like the truth of time travel in Donnie Darko, J.W. Dunne says that the truth of immortality is here; in fact, Dunne is as confident that you won't die as you are confident that you will die! What I take away from characters like Dunne is that if what they are arguing is true, then you can crack open a bear and enjoy life.Maybe if he live a few thousand years ago, J.W. Dunne will hand you a moral laundry list of do's and don't's. But in Serial Universe, New Immortality and his other fine books, Dunne is clear that the way you act in this life has absolutely nothing to do with your eternal life.
