(first published in 2007) On opening day of bear hunting season in Michigan's Upper Peninsula, a game warden is murdered right under Little Donny's tree stand.
Little Donny disappears into the backwoods, forcing sixty-six-year-old Gertie to use her "unique" investigative techniques to find her favorite grandson.
Gertie's search is hampered by her pin-curled bodyguard Kitty, her man-hungry friend Cora Mae, and Grandma Johnson-who should be mushing peas between her new false teeth in the Escanaba nursing home instead of setting up camp at Gertie's place.
To top it off, Gertie's son Blaze, the local sheriff, seems more concerned with arresting his mom for cruising down Highway M35 without a driver's license than finding Little Donny or catching the killer.
Praise for the series: "Laugh-out-loud funny" Crimespree Magazine "Fans of Janet Evanovich, imagine Grandma Mazur with a shotgun." Green Bay Press Gazette "One of the most memorable heroines in recent crime fiction." Lansing State Journal

  •     Deb Baker develops her characters just enough for the reader to get a feel for their personalities. Gertie and her two friends, Cora Mae and Kitty are investigating another murder in the U.P. Although her books aren't laugh out loud funny, they will bring a smile to your face. If you like a light comedic murder mystery, her books are for you.
  •     Deb Baker has a great way with a story. If you have read the Southern Sisters books by Anne George, you are sure to like Gertie Johnson and her side-kicks, Cora Mae and Kitty. Gertie gets herself into a heap of trouble trying to do some good. Her son thinks she's nuts, but she thinks her family is! She makes plenty of mistakes along the way, but she finally gets to the bottom of things in her town. Ms. Baker's story flows and her characters are well-developed. I just hope she's got more Gertie books on the way.
  •     Great storytelling. Love the insight into the regional characteristics of a townspeople and the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. Humorous and heartwarming!
  •     I like Gertie Johnson and her cohorts. They are older ladies, but are people, too. They have interesting and funny personalities. You can get a laugh while trying to decide who the bad guys are. I also thing that if you are from Michigan, you would especially enjoy the story and the people who are of Scandinavian heritage.
  •     Moving,funny great read.

  •     Deb Baker does a great job with this series. She writes a light and entertaining mystery. Gertie Johnson is a character in her sixties who feels that she must step up to help her son, the Sheriff, solve the occasional death in their hometown. He's not too keen about it, especially when she runs around breaking the laws in the process. But, she does it all with good intentions. This book involves bear season, her missing grandson and not one - but two deaths. It's a fun read - it draws you in and keeps you smiling!
  •     Love love love make more
  •     Hilariously fun mystery.
  •     Readers from all over the country will love Gertie Johnson and her uncanny ability to solve crime in Michigan's Upper Peninsula. She reminds me of Janet Evanovich's Grandma Mazur. I love Ms. Baker's whole series of Gertie books.
  •     I love Deb Baker's books. It's easy, interesting and fun reading. You can picture her character's in your mind as the story unfolds. I found myself actually laughing out loud on several occasions while reading this book. I checked the "some violence" only because there is a couple murders in the book .... but nothing "gory". Without the murders, there wouldn't be anything for Gert to investigate.
  •     I absolutely LOVE this series by Deb Baker, the characters are great and keep me laughing throughout the whole book! I'm excited for the next Gertie Johnson mystery
  •     Loved this book!!!
