Detective Lane returns for a fourth time in Smoked, Garry Ryan's darkest mystery to date. When Jennifer Towers is found dead in a graffiti-tagged dumpster, Detectives Lane and Harper must decipher the art to find its artist--and possibly the victim's killer.
What begins as an unconventional murder investigation leads to the disturbing discovery of two abused children, whose father becomes a prime suspect in the case.
In true Detective Lane form, Lane must protect the damaged youths while keeping his own family in tact.
With a surprising shift in tone, Smoked highlights the Detective Lane mystery series as one that reminds us of this generation's obligation to the children in its care.

  •     I'm definitely getting attached to Detective Lane. Ryan creates a wide range of characters that are interesting and believable. I like the way Lane's family keeps growing, and not in the usual way. On to read Malabarista.
  •     I'm Hooked! I've purchased everything. Good characters, well written and smart. Start at the beginning and just enjoy.
  •     I just picked up Detective Lane's series and finished this 4th book in less than a week. Smoked is a wonderful blend of mystery and family drama. The writer has done an excellent job injecting emotions into both. We get to know more of Lane's past which has much to do with the person he has become. I love this family of strays as their emotional problems alternate with the crime mystery itself but never overshadow it. Wonderful, clear, crisp writing which never drags but just enough to convey. As with the prior books, it is not "who dunnit" which is important but the devious human nature behind the crime which makes it such an engrossing read. I love how Lane and Harper handle their detective work, such a cohesive force. And now on to the 5th book,Malabarista (Detective Lane Mysteries)
  •     this book was so satisfying. Detective Lane had taken so much crap from Smoke and he still got the job done. In this one he smokes smoke. Great job!!!
  •     An excellent addition to the Lane saga. Garry Ryan's dry, low key style is reminiscent of another favorite, Martha Grimes. Continuing the series, Smoked builds Lane and Arthur's family while solving mysteries involving murder and more. Ryan never ceases to enthrall me.
  •     I "discovered" Garry Ryan when I saw that this book was nominated for the Lambda Literary Award for Best Gay Mystery. I figured I'd give it a shot, and I'm glad that I did. This is a really good book. It's well-plotted and paced, the writing is crisp and observant, and the conclusion is satisfying. What made it exceptional, though, is the emotional complexity of the relationships between the characters, particularly within Lane's family. This is a great mystery with genuine heart.
