[Narrated by Michael Palin] Following on from his highly successful television series and book, the indefatigable Michael Palin brings his incredible story to audio, recapturing all the excitement of his original expedition.
Complete with visas, running shoes, an inflatable globe, and sound advice from Alan Whicker, he set off to circumnavigate the world using only forms of transport available to the fictional Phileas Fogg.
His journey was phenomenal, his deadline eighty days.
The rest, as they say, is history.

From AudioFile

In 1988, British actor, writer, and humorist Michael Palin circum-navigated the globe, following the route taken by the fictional Phineas Fogg 115 years earlier.
He stuck to transportation modes that would have been available to Fogg, discovering along the way that passenger ships are fewer but faster and that camels are tall.
Palin writes well and is an accomplished actor.
This is his story, and he tells it very well.
Listeners familiar with Palin's acting, particularly in MONTY PYTHON, will find his skill with accents and voices undiminished.
He can even sound American when he wants to.
Longtime fans will be delighted to spend time in his company; listeners who don't know his work may discover a new friend.

  •     A great follow-up, after reading Jules Verne's Around the World in Eighty Days. I'm sure with a good travel agent it could have been much faster.
  •     Really enjoyed this book, which I received in excellent condition.
  •     love this one.
  •     A great start toPalin's travel series. Palin's trip keeps with the spirit of the Jules Verne story. Palin is a great storyteller.
  •     Having readPole to Pole
  •     I love to travel and love Michael Palin, so this was a great read for me. Funny, but also very well written. Paperback is lighter in weight than the hardback, so more portable.
  •     I read Around the World in 80 Days at the same time. I saw this title in my library catalog and was curious, but I was disappointed that neither Goodreads or Amazon could give me...
  •     Around the World in 80 Days: Companion to the Pbs Series (Best of the BBC)by Michael Palin is the first in his series of travelogues. It set the format for his later books and is well-written. I prefer his later books, such asHimalaya, where he does a better job with short character sketches and shares more of his inner thoughts. It should be noted that much of his "80 Days" trip involved travelling on container ships over oceans, which did considerably limit his scope for meeting new people.
  •     Fantastic book companion to the series and gives so much more detail on Palin's insights during his travels. Highly Recommend!
  •     Michael Pallin, the smart and neat Python, turned travel writer and documentarian in his late 40's. In one of his first epic trips he recreated Fogg's journey around the world...
  •     I have just finished this book and love it. Palin writes such readable books that I intendto read others. At the moment I have read Brazil, and Hemingway, all great.
  •     Having seen this television series of Michael Palin's trip, this is a nice way to refresh the memory. I understand that the book follows the video series very closely. I intend to read it at some time. I got it for my late husband and he did enjoy reading it. Mr. Palin's observations of the world were very interesting.
  •     Believe it or not it has been 24 years since Michael went round the world, and the world has changed a lot in that time. Michael, however, has not lost any of his star quality, this is a thoroughly entertaining read, in nice easy "chunks", with enough detail and fascinating observations to make it "unputdownable". Have now ordered Full Circle, as I could not get enough.
